The nice thing about the small and mid-sized business market is that the need for HR is not constant. We capitalize on the ebbs and flows of our client's needs to make sure we have fulltime jobs. This fractionalized approach allows us to share the costs among several clients for each consultant.
We have found that a retainer billing process works the best for this arrangement. With the retainer, you get unlimited access to your consultant and their time. We know that you are not in business to do HR, so we are not concerned about being taken advantage. We joke that we could choke a business with the amount of HR we could push onto a business. Of course, that's not our approach.
Our agreement is for 90 days. Thereafter, the agreement is month to month. The way we look at it is that we want to have the feel of an employee. If an employee is not pulling their weight, they are not protected by a long-term contract. Neither should we.
Bottom-line is that for about 1/4 to 1/3 the cost of a HR Professional, you can have the services of our entire firm.
